A February themed classroom bulletin board can help to celebrate a holiday such as Valentine’s Day, inform students and parents, or serve as an artwork display space. Choose one of the concepts in this article, or create a unique and imaginative design.
The Month of February Bulletin Board
Preschool teachers can use month or calendar theme to create a fun and informative bulletin board. Start by designing a large sized calendar on a piece of poster board or butcher paper. Use markers and a ruler to draw a calendar shaped grid.
After the basic calendar has been drawn, add in the month (February) and days of the week. Make sure that the lettering is large in size. Month and day words can be used frequently during class times to increase literacy skills such as letter and sound recognition.
Add in the numbers of the days in the month or create small numbered pieces of paper. Each day ask a different child to name the number that comes next, and then add it to the calendar.
Highlight special days such as Valentine’s Day with a design or sticker.
Valentine’s Day Bulletin Board
Create a holiday themed display using shapes, drawings or photographs. Ideas for a Valentine’s Day board include:
- Hearts: Start with a simple background in a holiday color (red, pink or white). Cut out hearts in a variety of sizes. Use construction paper in red or pink, or try different sheens or textures such as metallic, patterned, felt, craft foam, or lacey doilies.
- Friends: Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and friendship. Design a bulletin board that focuses on family or special friends. Add in photos of classmates and other friendly faces.
- Greeting Cards: It is a tradition to celebrate this holiday by sharing cards and notes. Reuse old decorative greeting cards by adding them into a bulletin board display. This is a great way to use cards that students from past years have given or made.
February Parent Information
Plan a classroom bulletin board that informs parents of upcoming monthly events. Make this board simple in design so as to highlight the information aspect. Start with a solid sheet of paper, and then add the month name at the top with cut out stencils. Information that may be important to include:
- Valentine’s Day party information
- Cold weather/outdoor play policies
- Parking lot winter safety Winter weather safety information
- School cancellation policies
- School days off
- Class schedule (include themes, special projects, and a daily timeline)
- Lunch/snack menus
Child Created Art Display
A February bulletin board can also be used to display current class artwork. Choose a theme (such as Valentine’s Day) and create a colorful bulletin board.
Include paintings, drawings, or collages that connect to February. For example, select a winter weather painting or a Valentine’s craft.
Label each artwork with the child’s name and a title. Ask the children to title their own pieces of art. Help them to write (or trace) the letters needed to spell the title.
A February bulletin board can be used in many different ways. Select a board based on classroom need, and encourage the students to help with the design. From a monthly calendar to a holiday celebration, these displays are sure to entertain and educate the preschool aged child.
