New York Kids' Summer Arts Camps

Don't let the kids simply sit around this summer. Instead, enroll your little ones in a uniquely creative summer art camp.

Summer art camps can help children of all ages to hone creative skills, learn about the artistic process and meet like minded peers. If your family lives in the New York City area, you may want to check out some of these top notch camps at local museums and art institutions.

Art Camp at the Guggenheim Museum

Children ages eight through 11 can learn from professional museum educators at this world class New York museum. Students will visit the Frank Lloyd Wright building, select special exhibits and the museum’s permanent collection as well as engaging in creative art making processes.

The Summerscapes Art Camp is held yearly in July, with two separate one-week sessions. Camps run Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. As an added bonus, students will get the opportunity to show their work at an end of camp mini exhibition.

Parents may register their child for one or both week-long sessions. There is a reduced fee rate for museum members and children enrolling in both sessions. Registration fees include the classes themselves, art materials, a CD Rom packed with photos of the session and a family pass for the week.

For more information, parents can visit the Guggenheim’s website or call 212-423-3637.

Children’s Museum of the Arts

The Children’s Museum of the Arts offers one- and two-week summer sessions through their Art Colonies program. Children ages six through 14 can enjoy their choice of summer camp visual arts classes at the museum’s SoHo or Governors Island locations.

Classes run from 9:00 am through 5:00 pm, with supervised playtime at the beginning and end of the day. The rest of the camper’s time will be filled art classes in processes and techniques such as painting, sculpture and animation.

All classes are taught by Teaching Artists, with a maximum enrollment of 16 students in each camp/class. For more information and class schedules, parents can visit the Children’s Museum of the Arts website or call 212-274-0986.

Creative Arts

The Creative Arts organization provides children between the ages of six and 15 years old with summertime programming in multiple artistic disciplines including visual and performing arts. Camps are divided into two programs based on the student’s age. The Junior Program reaches kids ages six and seven, while the Regular Program is intended for those eight through 15.

Junior Program camp runs Monday through Thursday from 8:50 am until 3:00 pm, and Friday from 8:50 am to 1:00 pm. Campers in the Regular program select their own daily schedule from classes such as Abstraction, Beading, Mixed Media, Printmaking, Clay, Drawing, Collage and more.

Parents can enroll by downloading the registration brochure from the Creative Arts website. For more information, call the program at 212-722-4745.

If your child is an art enthusiast try one of these, or the many other, New York City summer day art camps. Whether he attends a museum based program or the multi-art Creative Arts camp, there is sure to be a bounty of imaginative creation during the non-school months.
