Fun Activities for Father's Day

Ideas for Parent-Child Projects and Outings

Create lasting memories by joining your child in special Father's Day activities.

Father’s Day presents a great opportunity for any dad to spend some quality time with his son or daughter. This article outlines an assortment of fun daddy-child activities suitable for children of many different ages.

Father’s Day Arts Activities

The visual arts, crafts, dance, music, and theater are amazing ways to boost your child’s development and create meaningful parent-child experiences.

Fun father-child arts oriented activities may include:

  • Create an artwork or craft together. Make this a meaningful family project. Draw a father-son portrait or paint a daddy-daughter masterpiece.
  • Enjoy photography together. Take a walk around the neighborhood together and snap some interesting pictures. Look for a variety of colors, textures, and patterns. Ask your child to think about different angles and light sources.
  • See a play or a ballet. Find an age appropriate, child friendly dance or theater production to enjoy together.
  • Make your own music together. Does your child play the piano, violin, or other instrument? Accompany him or her in a special father-child song. Another option is to create your own instruments. Pots and pans are simple, yet entertaining, music makers for young children.

Father’s Day Nature Activities

Take a break from cell phones, e-mail, and work. Unplug and spend some time experiencing nature with your child.

Nature based Father’s day activities may include:

  • Take a walk in the park.
  • Go on a special nature hike.
  • Sit under a tree and read a book together.
  • Go on a nature scavenger hunt. Look for different types of plants and flowers.

Sports and Other Physical Exercise Father’s Day Activities

Get active and choose an activity that will help your child to improve his or her gross motor abilities, increase eye hand coordination, learn about good sportsmanship, or work as part of a team.

Sports type Father’s Day activities may include:

  • Organize a game of baseball, softball, or soccer with other dads and children in the neighborhood.
  • Find a game that the two of you can play together. Examples are tennis, bowling, catch, or ping pong.
  • Try a few rounds of miniature golf.
  • Set up an obstacle course in the backyard, and have a Father’s Day Olympics. This may even become a yearly tradition.

General Activities Based on Age

  • Infant: Take a stroll through the neighborhood or a local park.
  • Toddler: Create a messy finger-painting together. Both father and child can work together on one piece of paper.
  • Preschooler: Go to the playground. Instead of sitting by and watching, get involved. Try the slide, climbing ladders, the sandbox, or a game of tag.
  • Grade School Aged Children: Read a book together. Ask your child to choice his or her favorite story and take turns reading it out loud. When you are finished create your own story in book form. This may be a written mini-novel, picture book, or comic.
  • Adolescents: Attend a concert, sporting event, or movie together.

There are many fantastic Father’s Day activities to share with your child. Whether it is an art project, nature walk, or sport, your child will greatly appreciate the time that you spend together.
